Camden County Officials Announce Arrest Of 2 People For Apparent Human Trafficking

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS)As New Jersey gears up for Sunday’s Super Bowl, authorities are shining a light on the darker side to the big game — human trafficking.

Authorities in South Jersey are using a newly enhanced statute to crack down on human trafficking.

Police are making arrests.

“I had a protective and loving mother and farther, and yet I was exploited a at a very young age,” victim Lexie Smith said.

And to protect the young and vulnerable from the sex trade during the busy Super Bowl weekend, Governor Chris Christie says their task force is in full effect.

“We have eyes and ears on the ground and in cyberspace,” Christie said.

Man Arrested After Explosive Devices Are Found In Union, N.J.

UNION, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A Union Township, N.J. man was arrested Monday, after authorities found an improvised explosive device and other weaponry Monday at his home.

Alfred Intrabartolo, 62, was charged Monday with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree certain persons not to own firearms, and third-degree possession of a destructive device, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s office. He was being held on $250,000 cash bail late Monday afternoon, and other charges were pending.

Last week, neighbors called police to complain about someone setting off low-grade explosive devices in a neighborhood near the Route 22 corridor in Union, prosecutors said. On Monday, authorities set up a surveillance operation, and allegedly caught Intrabartolo tossing an explosive device that looked like a large firecracker out of a moving vehicle.

Intrabartolo was arrested, and police found a loaded .32-caliber handgun and other explosives in his vehicle, prosecutors said.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The robber was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A man wearing dark clothes and a ski mask walked into the TJ Maxx store on Route 73, went directly to the jewelry counter, and immediately smashed a rock through the glass case, police said.

The whole incident was caught on surveillance video.

The video shows the robbery suspect reaching into the case again and again.

The man grabbed $25,797 worth of watches and stuffed them into a bag and turned around to leave the store.

As the suspect made a run for it, another man is seen on the tape walking toward him, and then breaking into a run and tackling him to the ground.

The two struggled on the floor, and the suspect lost his mask – and the loot, police said.

2 Killed, 3 Injured In Newark Shooting

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Two people were killed and three others were wounded when someone fired several shots at a car outside a Newark restaurant.

But it’s not clear what sparked the shooting, which occurred around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday on Springfield Avenue in the city’s West Ward. Authorities say it appears that at least one of the victims was targeted by the shooter, but they declined further comment.

City Police Director Samuel DeMaio told The Newark Star-Ledger that the car’s driver, Akbar Muhammad, who is the son of a Newark imam, and a female passenger were killed in the shooting. The three other victims were all hospitalized in stable condition, but further details on their injuries were not disclosed.

Missing N.J. Couple Found Dead In Garage At Wayne Home

WAYNE, N.J. (AP) — Prosecutors say a young couple who went missing late last month have been found dead in a garage at a northern New Jersey home.
But it’s not yet known what caused the deaths of 24-year-old Garfield resident Jorge Rodriguez and his 25-year-old girlfriend, Melissa Pereira. They were found around 11:15 a.m. in Wayne, but authorities would not provide further details.
The couple was last seen leaving Pereira’s home in Wayne on Dec. 27.
Authorities have said they were headed to a Pennsylvania bed and breakfast, where they had made New Year’s Eve reservations. They were reported missing Dec. 30.
Passaic County Assistant Prosecutor Michael DeMarco told The Star-Ledger that investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the deaths.

Wilmington Woman Accused Of Stabbing Man With Kitchen Knife

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — A Wilmington woman is accused of stabbing a man with a kitchen knife during an argument.

Police say 24-year-old Tawanna Gans faces charges including second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities say Gans and a man were arguing in their home Saturday afternoon when she allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed him in the head in front of their 2-year-old child.

The man, whose name was not released, was in serious but stable condition.

No phone listing could immediately be found for Gans. Police say she turned herself in at Wilmington police headquarters.
