RICHMOND, Va. — Bob McDonnell had just been elected governor of Virginia when a wealthy businessman who had donated the use of his private jet during the Republican’s campaign requested a meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel in New York.
The governor-elect obliged and brought along his wife, Maureen, who told Jonnie Williams she needed a dress for the inauguration the following month, according to a federal indictment charging the couple with corruption and lying to investigators.
Williams agreed to buy her an Oscar de la Renta gown, but a Bob McDonnell aide said it would be inappropriate and nixed the idea, according to the indictment.
Peeved, the former Washington Redskins cheerleader and future first lady fired off an email to the staffer.

WASHINGTON — Marijuana, which is still placed in the same category as heroin, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms by the federal government, is no more dangerous than alcohol, President Barack Obama said in an interview published Sunday.
Speaking to New Yorker editor David Remnick, Obama said he still viewed pot smoking negatively – but that on the whole, the drug wasn’t the social ill that it’s been viewed as in the past.
“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol,” Obama told the weekly magazine.
The president said pot was actually less dangerous that alcohol “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.”

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It has been a frustrating few months for many in North Carolina who rely on food stamps but still haven’t gotten them.
Ananda Bennett is a quadriplegic who has been waiting to receive her benefits since November but still hasn’t gotten them.
“It’s just not right,” Bennett said. “It shouldn’t be that hard to have to worry about “Oh my God, am I going to be able to eat this month?”
She’s a quadriplegic mainly gets by on her monthly disability checks and food stamps.
“It’s very difficult,” she said. “I’m not able to dress or feed myself or anything else.”
After several calls and trips to Guilford County Department of Social Services, she says she either got no response or was told to wait.
