NC high school football star drowns off North Topsail Beach

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina high school quarterback who recently helped his team to the state championship has drowned off North Topsail Beach.

WITN reported that 19-year-old Shak Pershey was found dead in the water around 2:10 a.m. Friday after swimming with friends Thursday night.

Authorities said Pershey went under water around 7 p.m. Thursday and never surfaced.

Pershey was a senior at Southwest Onslow High School in Jacksonville who helped the Stallions win the Class 1AA State Football Championship in December.

He was set to graduate in less than three weeks.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and school at this tragic time for the death of a Southwest senior football player,” said Onslow County School District Associate Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins, according to WITN.
